The Getty Marrow Community Programs Internship with Your Neighborhood Museum provides an opportunity to support the empowerment of artists and communities historically under-represented and under-resourced by traditional arts institutions to care for our own cultural heritage and tell our own stories. YNM believes that cultural heritage preservation builds community power and is an expression of care for ourselves and each other. YNM utilizes a mutual aid framework, encourages creative approaches to addressing community needs, and works to achieve tangible improvements for our communities.
Under the direct supervision of YNM staff, the internship will support the development and implementation of the Mellon/YNM Caring About and Repatriating Everything (CARE) Program. CARE supports tribes from across CA in the repatriation and preservation of cultural belongings through workshops and capacity-building initiatives. The intern will perform administrative duties, develop workshop materials, engage in community outreach, and complete a variety of research assignments. They will have an opportunity to connect with a diverse range of culture workers which may include professionals in public programs, repatriation, archives, conservation, collections management, artists, and CA tribal representatives. The intern will also receive mentorship from YNM staff.
The Getty Marrow Community Programs Internship is a combination of in-person and remote work and will likely include site visits. Applicants should be interested in the role of arts and culture in social justice practice, programs development, repatriation, preservation/conservation, collections management, and community engagement. Applicants may be students in American Indian studies/ethnic studies, communications, history, art history, anthropology, applied/studio arts, and related fields.
This Getty Marrow Community Programs Internship is made possible with support from the Getty Foundation.
